BIBD through the Advocating Life-Long Learning for An Aspiring Future (ALAF) programme held a three-day ALAF Ta’aruf Camp including a Public Speaking Workshop and ALAF Convention.

The students were formally introduced to BIBD and the ALAF Program, providing them with a deeper understanding of the Bank’s vision and how its flagship CSR programme can help underprivileged but deserving students achieve their aspirations.

The interactive camp consisted of team building exercises, art workshop, spelling contest as well as a presentation from the senior ALAF students on their recent educational trip to Singapore, to inspire and motivate the incoming students to excel in their studies.

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) today held an awards ceremony recognising the achievements of almost fifty underprivileged students enrolled in BIBD’s Advocating Life-Long Learning for An Aspiring Future (ALAF) programme.

Among those awarded were eighteen students of the general and Arabic primary school level; sixteen students of the general and Arabic secondary school level; ten students who scored 5As in the PSR Examination; and three ‘Top Achievers’ who maintained excellent academic results throughout the year.

BIBD today reached another milestone with the signing of a MoU with AgromeIQ for the implementation of its Sprout (iQ) Farm.

The collaboration will see thirty ALAF students participate in the four-month programme where they will have access to the locally-developed mobile app which provides guidance on farming processes and fundamentals of starting their own farm. At the same time, Agrome IQ will be giving weekly sessions to the participants on the evolving methods of farming.

This collaboration is part of BIBD’s efforts to further improve the ALAF platform, which is supported by educational monitoring, guidance, camps and visits. At the same time, the programme also encourages its participants to better understand the benefits of farming, and also nutritional healthy eating from the crops they grow.

BIBD will also provide the participants with a farming area to grow their own crops, so that they will be able to reap the rewards of their efforts.

The Sprout (iQ) app is aimed at people living in urban areas wanting to utilize their limited space into sustainable farms. The app also provides daily reminders and notifications on how to best your crops.

BIBD, with the support of the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Sports, was honoured with the ASEAN (Association of South-east Asian Nations) Rural Development and Poverty Eradication (RDPE) Leadership Awards at the 10th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Rural Development and Poverty Eradication (AMRDPE), held at JW Marriott Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The award is ASEAN’s recognition of private sector involvement for their contribution in rural development and poverty eradication in the region which has helped provide access and opportunities, while at the same time empowering the people to provide for themselves.

BIBD was nominated as a result of its efforts in supporting, developing and progressing members of the Bruneian community, especially those in rural areas. BIBD’s initiatives such as its ALAF programme and Sirah Amal were lauded as supporting the country’s efforts towards increasing the standard of living.

As part of BIBD’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, BIBD today contributed more than two thousand Brunei Dollars along with basic daily essentials collected for a student from its ALAF Programme whose residence was destroyed in a fire recently. Also affected was the student’s family of seven.

The donation campaign was organised by BIBD in its drive and commitment to support and contribute to the welfare of its students. All these efforts are meant to ensure the absolute commitment of the ALAF programme towards the development of its students in the accomplishment of their education.

The contributed items were collected and distributed by the BIBD ALAF team with the collaboration of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS).

BIBD sent off its first BIBD ALAF Scholar, Dyg Norhafikah Binti Hj Awg Bakri, to continue her studies in the prestigious University of Al-Azhar, Egypt. She will be pursuing her undergraduate study in the field of Syariah Islamiah for four years.

Dyg Norhafikah, a student under the BIBD ALAF Programme scholarship, is the programme’s first student to continue her studies beyond the secondary level and also the first to do it overseas.

BIBD today launched a dedicated library to further support the development of underprivileged students under its ALAF Programme. With this, members of the public are also encouraged to contribute to the continued success of the library, at the same time the ALAF Programme, by donating new or even their own books.

This launch is in line with its commitment towards ensuring that the students have more resources along with a dedicated platform to revise their studies outside their school environment. The library also serves as a place where BIBD ALAF students can converge among themselves, allowing them to build better relationship among themselves.

Also during the launch and in support towards the ALAF Programme, Kenwood Furniture Trading Company provided a donation of almost ten thousand dollars to BIBD ALAF.

The BIBD ALAF Programme recently closed its BIBD ALAF Career and Smart Camps which ran for a total of seven days at the Orchid Garden Hotel in Berakas. The two camps included almost fifty students, and included talks and counselling sessions tailored to bring the best out of these students.

The Career Camp was crafted with the intention to prepare the more senior ALAF students with awareness on career opportunities available and how they are able to focus their studies to steer their efforts towards preferred careers.

On the other hand, the Smart Camp seeks to further motivate and support the development and progression of selected students, by building their self-confidence, developing their capabilities and ensuring that they are driven to achieve their goals.

THE Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) organised an outing to the Brunei Book Fair at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas for its top 13 ALAF students, who were also recognised recently for their excellent achievements at the 4th BIBD ALAF Award presentation ceremony. The students showed their delight for the opportunity to browse reading materials that can help support their educational aspirations in pursuit of academic success, said a press release. At the book fair, the BIBD ALAF programme students were also given a provision to purchase selected materials. This activity was aimed at encouraging and inculcating a strong reading culture among the ALAF students. Accompanying the students to the book fair were members of the ALAF Taskforce along with BIBD officials.

 

At the book fair, BIBD ALAF Programme students were provided with a provision to purchase selected material, while at the same time, allowing them to manage their expenses to focus on essential education materials.

This activity was aimed to encourage and inculcate a strong reading culture among ALAF students. Accompanying the students to the Book Fair were members of the ALAF Task force along with BIBD officials, who also provided the students with guidance on their selected items.

The ALAF programme was developed in close partnership with the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education, and in 2015 a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed with the Islamic Studies Department from the Ministry of Religious Affairs that will lead to constant efforts and close collaboration between all parties, to ensure the successful implementation and provision of assistance to the ALAF programme. Today, the Program has 141 students and this year, will be supporting its first ALAF Scholar in tertiary education at a leading international university, In Shaa Allah.

ENSURING that underprivileged students continue to attain knowledge and academic skills to achieve a better future, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) has enrolled 42 new students and recognised the achievements of 13 underprivileged students in its Advocating Life-LongLearning for an Aspiring Future (ALAF) programme.

Among the recipients were five students who scored 5As in the PSR Examination; one student who achieved nine Credits in the Brunei Cambridge BGCE ‘O’ Level; two students who achieved an aggregate score of 10 and nine in the Brunei Religious Education Certificate Examination (SPUB) and a student who achieved ‘Mumtaz’ result in the Brunei Religious Certificate of Higher Education Examination (STPUB).

The ALAF students who scored 5As in their PSR Examination were also granted the ALAF Scholar Award and are currently studying at the International School Brunei.

The annual BIBD ALAF Programme Awards Ceremony continues to recognise the importance of inclusive education. The BIBD ALAF ‘Special Education Bursary’ was awarded to a total of six special needs students from the Special Education Unit of the Ministry of Education. The Bursary includes educational provisions such as laptops, printers, special need education materials and wheelchairs.

The event also witnessed the presentation of a letter of appointment to 50 new ALAF Student Welfare Teachers from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs, for a two year term.
